AI-Powered X-Rays: Revolutionizing Veterinary Diagnostics

In my 22+ years in the veterinary industry, I’ve seen some amazing advancements, but AI-powered digital x-rays are something special. They help us get faster, more accurate results, making it easier to give your pets the best care possible. What’s even more incredible is that your pet’s X-ray will be compared against a database of over 16 million images, warning of potential issues and giving us insights that were unimaginable just a few years ago.

X-rays aren't just for broken bones!

X-rays are often associated with checking for broken bones, but they do so much more. For dogs and cats, X-rays are essential for diagnosing a wide range of health issues that aren't visible during a physical exam. They can detect lung abnormalities, tumors, bladder stones, and digestive blockages. X-rays also play a vital role in monitoring chronic conditions like arthritis or heart disease by providing detailed images of internal structures. So yes, we still use them to check for breaks and fractures. But they're so much more than that.

The Steps Involved in Veterinary X-rays

Let's do a quick walk-through of the steps we take when we X-ray your pet.

  1. Determine if X-rays are Necessary

It seems obvious, but before we actually decide to X-ray, our veterinarians begin with a thorough physical examination to assess your pet's condition and determine if they're necessary. If our vets decide that X-rays are the recommended next step, they'll discuss the procedure with you, including any sedation or medication (if needed) to ensure your pet's comfort.
  2. Medication or Sedation if Required

Most of the time, we don't need to medicate or sedate your pet to take an X-ray. In some cases though, they're a good option to reduce stress on your pet and ensure we can get the highest quailty images.
  3. Positioning your Pet

If you've ever had an X-ray yourself, it probably seemed fairly simple. The nurse positions you or tells you where to stand, they leave the room, click a button, and voila - you're done. With animals, it's similar, but not as easy, since we can't just ask your pet to stay still and leave the room. Two of our technicians (all with over 10 years' experience), wearing lead aprons and mitts, work together to position your pet on the X-ray table. We use foam wedges and sandbags to assist in positioning.
  4. Taking the actual X-rays

Using a technique chart, we make adjustments on the exposure time and power to ensure exposure to radiation is limited for both your pet and our staff. When everything is set, we use a foot pedal to take the X-ray. If needed, multiple X-rays are taken from different angles.

Why Digital X-Rays are a Game Changer

Before we get to the AI part, let's talk about digital X-rays. Having worked with both traditional film and digital X-rays, I can confidently say, digital technology has completely transformed veterinary care. Here's what makes it so much better:

  • Digital X-rays produce clearer, more detailed images which allow for better evaluation of fractures, masses, and other issues.
  • With instant image capture, there's no need to wait for film to develop. This speeds up both diagnosis and treatment.
  • Brightness, contrast, and zoom can be adjusted on digital images, revealing details that might not be visible on traditional film.
  • Digital images can be sent instantly to specialists or other veterinarians, making collaboration easier and faster.
  • Digital X-rays eliminate the need for film and chemical processing, reducing waste and environmental impact.

Integrating AI

Now that we've talked about how pet X-rays are taken and why digital X-rays are so much better than traditional, let's get to the really good stuff. AI. It's such a hot topic right now, and you might even be tired of hearing about it. But AI is continuing to change our lives in SO many ways, and veterinary medicine is no exception.

Using AI to analyze our X-rays has completely blown me away. The system we use, called RapidRead by Antech, can analyze X-rays in minutes. It compares your pet's X-rays with 16 million images. Yes, you read that right. Their system was trained on 16 MILLION X-ray images and compares them against your pet's X-ray to look for problems and confirm our vet's diagnosis. It takes into account your pet's age, weight, breed, and medical history and tailors an unbiased evaluation specifically for your pet.

So your pet's X-ray has now been reviewed by our veterinarian, and had the results confirmed by an amazing new technology. But that's not all! If the AI detects anything that it deems potentially life-threatening, it automatically sends the images to an actual human specialist to review further. Things like bone lesions, intestinal obstructions, and lung abnormalities are automatically flagged, brought to our attention, and reviewed for confirmation. I can't even express how amazing this is.
